Clippytron: Added sources and another section on how it is a problem. I think the wording should be touched up next, and I think the examples section should explain more, I will do this later if no one else makes an edit before then.

Incomplete
AV (Age Verification) also referred to as AA (Age Affirmation) is the process in where a business requires some form of identification to verify your age. This is usually done for more explicit or mature content. This practice has been widely spreading since the UK's OSA (Online Safety Act) has passed; requiring all individuals to verify themselves before accessing mature content. Certain ways of checking can include: checking for a valid credit card, facial age estimation tools, government issued id, bio-metric data, or account history behavior and so forth.

How it works
When accessing a platform or website that may contain content not suitable for all audiences may force you to register for the platform along with verifying your age by one of the methods mentioned previously. Sites that likely don't use any form of account system will probably have a popup instead requiring you to verify your age before even serving the content you were trying to access.

Why it is a problem
Privacy
Having companies easily able to identify you means they can track you more efficiently and sell that shared profile to other companies such as ad agencies that then start targeting you specifically.

Governments can also more easily track online movements and find out who you are. Saying something that may go against their own agenda may end up with a police raid and heavy interrogation and prison time.

Censorship
Certain topics such as 18+ or political will likely be unfairly censored by the governing body or company that has a say on what platform has the potential to be inappropriate for minors or other age groups.

Platforms that host this type of content may also be more proactive in deleting/hiding posts that may get them in trouble or fined by laws or policies by local governments leading to a more censored internet where opinions are streamlined to fit a set narrative or outlook.

Storage of Private and Biometric Information by Age Verification Service Providers
A study commissioned by the Australian government found that age verification service providers accumulate a concerning amount of personal information, sometimes even biometric in nature, even when that was not necessary to provide the age verification service.

Driving users towards smaller and completely unregulated offerings
Big platforms can be regulated and forced to comply with applicable laws since they need to have infrastructure such as servers in all major markets. Only these will be affected by the age restriction requirement.

However, users who do not wish to compromise their privacy or who are not of age will then go looking towards smaller niche platforms, often in other regions not affected by the regulation or the darknet. With these offerings, there is little to no leverage with regards to removal of illegal content. Increased exposure to illegal content can then lead to both a strengthening of illegal content providers and significantly increased danger to minors, who may not yet be able to differentiate between legal and illegal content as well as an adult.

Increased Damage from Data Breaches
Platforms which implement age checks that require sensitive information such as a government-issued ID will likely be more of a target for cyber criminals. As more platforms comply with the age checks, it becomes more likely that a data breach on at least one of these platforms can reveal extremely sensitive information. In the case of a data breach, it can be catastrophic if users' sensitive information were exposed, which can likely result in identity theft.

Platforms already experience major losses and consumer distrust from data breaches that reveal information less sensitive than government-issued IDs or biometric data. A data breach involving information this sensitive will seriously damage a business, and the users even more so. As stated previously, users who foresee these privacy risks will turn away from platforms which implement the policy, and towards niche platforms.
*YouTube's Age verification and account estimation algorithm.

*Spotify's Age affirmation for MA rated songs and content.

*Discord's Age verification for accounts determining what eligible servers are available.

Features on Demand (FoD), also called On-Demand Features (ODF) or Functions on Demand, refers to the process in which businesses provide a particular function or feature that can be added whenever the consumer wants or needs it. FoD can also allow for subscription models to be added effectively, allowing monetary gain for businesses. However, this has led to situations involving tangible hardware being disabled via software, requiring a subscription to enable the feature.

How it works
Features on Demand is built on top of the general On-Demand business model, which allows consumers to order a product or service conveniently, and receive it quickly. Generally, FoD adds upon this by allowing consumers to add or later remove an additional feature or function whenever needed within a product they already own without human contact, allowing more customization and personalization. However, FoD is sometimes paired with a pay-per-use or subscription model, which charges the consumer to continue to have the feature or function activated.

In the Automotive industry, FoD is typically used with subscriptions. While FoD can be related to Over-The-Air (OTA) updates, OTA is used to update a vehicle's software wirelessly, while FoD uses OTA to enable or disable a feature or function after a subscription or fee is paid.

In a more software related environment, FoD is related to Software as a Service (SaaS), which often allows FoD to even function.

Why it can be a problem
Ability to be Abused
FoD features that require subscriptions can generate a lot of money for businesses. In the Automotive industry, FoD is projected to generate $5.2 billion in revenue by 2030. The large potential for monetary gain can potentially motivate companies to lock more features or functions behind paywalls, which previously may have been free. This can cause a negative reaction from consumers, who may perceive this as "unfair," and create distrust. If consumers believe that a practice is unfair or not trustworthy, it is likely that they will switch to a different brand or service, which can seriously damage a business.

Hardware Disabled From Software
In industries such as the Automotive industry, tangible hardware, or hardware that is physically present within the product, may be disabled via software, often requiring a subscription to reactivate. An example of this is the BMW Heated Seat Scandal. This practice has received a largely negative response from consumers, many of which may consider it "unfair." In a survey conducted by Norstat, 42% of respondents stated "I am not willing to pay on a regular basis for such additional functions," and 35% stated "It is outrageous to install useful functions in cars without activating them for the customer."

Potential Security Risk
The implementation of FoD will require internet-access through SaaS for the necessary software to function. However, this can open more areas of attack for cybercriminals if not handled correctly, for example: a connected car could experience a Denial of Service attack, which can manipulate the engine and car locks.
Examples
Microsoft uses FoD in the Windows Operating System to allow users to add at any time, an example of a feature that can be added is the language resources, such as handwriting recognition. There does not seem to be any subscription required to add these features.
Audi equips all vehicles with the optional tri-zone climate control feature with the necessary hardware. Customers who do not purchase the option at the time of sale still receive the hardware, but the feature is disabled via software. Enabling it later via a remote software update costs $758. Reminders prompting a purchase are displayed if a user presses the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) sync button before the feature is unlocked.

Background
Audi is an automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles based in Germany. Audi is a subsidiary company of Volkswagen.

Historically, if a vehicle owner opted out of purchasing a specific feature, any buttons associated with that feature would be replaced with blank plastic panels, often called "blank buttons." Pressing these blank buttons would not activate any functions or mechanisms within the vehicle.

However, Features on Demand (FoD) is becoming increasingly popular among car manufacturers. FoD features are subscription-type features, meaning they can only be enabled with a subscription.

Incident
An owner of an Audi Q4 E-Tron opted out of paying for tri-zone climate control, which is an optional add-on in regions outside of the U.S. and U.K., priced at $758. However, the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) “Sync” button was still physically present within the vehicle.
Audi's Response
While not explicitly responding to the incident, Oliver Hoffman, the head of the Technical Development division at the time, has suggested that FoD will appear more within the future, "With our next generation of electronic architecture, we will bring more offers to 'function on demand,' and you will see year by year we will bring new functions in the cars…A few years ago, there were ideas to generate more revenue on digitalization functions than by selling cars." Audi insists that the decision to pivot towards FoD was in response to consumer demand.

Consumer response
Some users on Reddit, in direct response to the incident, were fearful and frustrated about the possible future of the automotive industry. Many believed this would result in subscriptions being required to access most functions, imagining a reality where many of even the most basic features are locked behind paywalls.

Others were more generally opposed to features that are only available through subscriptions. In a survey conducted by the Cox Automotive, 58% of respondents stated that FoD, atleast initially, would be "too expensive," and 69% stated that if the features were only available via subscription, they would "shop elsewhere." However, only 21% were previously aware of FoD, and 65% believe that if free-trials for subscriptions were provided, they'd be more likely to consider a brand.

While FoD can be related to Over-The-Air(OTA) updates, OTA is used to update a vehicle's software wirelessly, while FoD uses OTA to enable or disable a feature or function after a subscription or fee is paid.

In a more software related environment, FoD is related to Software as a Service(SaaS), which often allows FoD to even function.

Mullvad states it will never log, modify, redirect, or inject data into a user's traffic. They also state they will never filter or block domains unless specifically requested by the owner of an Internet Protocol (IP) address, or if botnet addresses cause servers to be null routed by hosting providers.

Privacy
Mullvad has a strict no-log policy on their services and undergo independent audits regularly to solidify these claims.

Mullvad provides various methods of payment depending on the level of anonymity desired from the user, including cash, bank wire, Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Monero, PayPal, credit cards through Stripe, Swish, Eps transfer, Bancontact, iDEAL, and Przelewy24.

Business Model
Since its inception in 2009, Mullvad has had a fixed price of €5 per month. As of June of 2022, Mullvad removed subscriptions, defined as automatic recurring payments, as a way to increase user privacy by storing less data. As a result of their decision to remove subscriptions: only one-time payments are allowed.

Mullvad has a very serious policy rejecting paid reviews, influencer sponsorships, and shout-outs as a testament to their integrity. Alternatively, they resort to purchasing ads outdoors, on Google, DuckDuckGo, and the Apple App Store. Similarly, they reject exchanging money for advertisements and shout-outs on their service applications, website, and blog, and state that any reviews they post are solely of their opinion.

Mullvad also provides the service backend for Mozilla FireFox's VPN.

Background
Audi is an automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles, which is based in Germany. Audi is a subsidiary company of Volkswagen.

Historically, if a vehicle owner opts out of purchasing a specific feature or function within the vehicle, any buttons related to the feature would be replaced with blank pieces of plastic ("blank buttons"). Pressing these blank buttons would not trigger any functions or mechanisms within the vehicle.

However, Features on Demand (FoD) is becoming increasingly popular among car manufacturers. FoD features are subscription-type features, meaning they can only be enabled with a subscription.

Others were more generally opposed features that are only available through subscriptions. In a survey conducted by the Cox Automotive, 58% of respondents stated that FoD, atleast initially, would be "too expensive," and 69% stated that if the features were only available via subscription, that they'd "shop elsewhere." However, only 21% were previously aware of FoD, and 65% believe that if free-trials for subscriptions were provided, they'd be more likely to consider a brand.
Bitly is a platform that manages links and shortens URLs. Users have complained that QR codes created with Bitly were unexpectedly deactivated once the user's free trial has expired, these codes can only be reactivated with a subscription to a paid plan.

Background
Ph-I-B
Bitly owns and operates QR-Code-Generator.com, a platform marketed as offering “free” QR code creation. Many users have reported that while the service initially generates functioning QR codes at no cost, those codes are later deactivated unless the user subscribes to a paid plan.<ref>{{Cite web |date=11 Jun 2025 |title=I received a message saying that my QR Codes will be deactivated.
A widely discussed Reddit post from 2021 titled "Don't order a QR code from qrcodegenerator.com..." has over 230 comments detailing similar consumer complaints.<ref name=":1">{{Cite web |last=u/whoisfryingbaloney |date=23 Aug 2021 |title=Don't order a QR Code from QR-code-generator.com.
Incident
Ph-I-I
Multiple new user reports emerged describing the same pattern of QR codes becoming inactive after creation unless a subscription fee was paid. Many users claim they were unaware of any time limit or requirement for ongoing payment at the time of code creation. These codes, once printed and distributed, ceased to function—leading to wasted production costs and damaged customer trust.

Bitly's response
Ph-I-ComR
As of this writing, Bitly has not issued a public statement addressing the continued consumer concerns about QR code deactivation. The official Terms of Service mention subscription requirements, but users argue these conditions are not clearly disclosed during code creation, especially when marketed as “free.”

Lawsuit
Ph-I-L
No known lawsuits have been filed as of now. However, given the multi-year pattern of complaints, the issue may attract regulatory or class-action scrutiny if not addressed.

Consumer response
Ph-I-ConR
Users have expressed frustration across social media platforms, Reddit, and review sites, warning others about the practice. Some suggest that public posts on LinkedIn and other platforms tagging the company could pressure Bitly to change its approach. The consensus among dissatisfied customers is that the business model is deceptive and undermines trust, and that repairing such a damaged reputation is far more difficult than preserving it in the first place.
}}Users privacy is being violated by YouTube's new policy. The policy requires Users to provide government issued id in order to access content.

Background
YouTube is a social media site created on February 14th, of 2005. It allows Users to both upload and view video form content from their electronic devices. Over time, certain individuals, known as content creators, began to make a living off this platform. As popularity of the platform grew, more requirements became necessary. However, more recently, YouTube has been using the requirements as a loophole to take more away from the User.

YouTube's Government ID Requirement
Recently, on July 30th, 2025, YouTube has announced that they will be testing a new feature on its platform which requires Users to provide government issued id to verify if they are 18. If Users refuse, their account will be unable to access any content. This is in response to the UK's Online Safety Act. This act requires companies to verify their User's ages on their platform. This however, violates America's first amendment right to prohibit the free speech of people and/or the press.

YouTube's Response
YouTube has responded stating that "This will not be required for all Users," and, "We have always had the option for age verification via id or credit card if the user is incorrectly estimated to be under 18." Although, they have not corrected previous errors with AI they had in the past.

Consumer response
Users are left frustrated by this requirement. As such, users have signed a petition and have contacted YouTube to revoke this new requirement. However, their concerns have been ignored by YouTube as they doubled down on keeping the requirement.
