=== [[Best Buy Discontinuation of Insignia Connect App|Discontinuation of Insignia Connect App]] ===
On November 6, 2019, Best Buy discontinued support for their Insignia Connect app,<ref name=":0">https://web.archive.org/web/20191105124635/https://bestbuy.symphonysummit.com/insignia.web/<nowiki/>(November 5th, 2019) Retrieved January 15th, 2025</ref> resulting in major functionality losses for affected Insignia products that used the service. Best Buy did provide compensation to affected customers, however, this was only in the form of a partial refund, issued in the form of a virtual gift card that was determined by the product type.<ref name=":1">https://web.archive.org/web/20191212130853/https://bestbuy.symphonysummit.com/insignia.web/Help_FAQ#collapseNine<nowiki/>(December 12th, 2019) Retrieved January 15th, 2025</ref><ref name=":0" /> Customers were also only able to redeem up to a maximum of 10 serial numbers for product refunds, even if they owned more than 10 affected products.<ref name=":2">https://web.archive.org/web/20241125000759/https://www.theverge.com/2019/9/6/20853671/best-buy-connect-insignia-smart-plug-wifi-freezer-mobile-app-shutdown-november-6<nowiki>(November 25th, 2024) Retrieved January 15th, 2025 [Note: This source references functionality loss covered in a Best Buy FAQ. == Data Privacy Concerns ==
According to Best Buy's privacy policy,<ref>https://www.bestbuy.com/site/help-topics/privacy-policy/pcmcat204400050062.c?id=pcmcat204400050062</ref> the company may collect, sell, and share information that users willingly provide, as well as information gathered through various tracking technologies.

In general, users may be asked to provide the company with their name, various forms of contact information, and payment information.

'''In "certain situations," users may also be asked to provide:'''

* Driver's license number
* Social Security number
* Demographic and lifestyle information
* Health information
* Fingerprints
* Facial/wrist geometry (although the policy states this occurs in real time and the data is not retained)

'''The company may also collect data that users do not knowingly or explicitly provide:'''

* Camera and sensor data (from physical store locations)
* User IP address
* User browser information, browsing history, and referring URL
* The unique IMEI/UDID or MAC address of users mobile device
* The IDFA (Apple ID) or AAID (Google ID) of users mobile device
* Location information

This data collection can occur directly through users browser/device, or through third party web tracking technologies such as cookies, pixels and tags.

All of the above information can be sold or shared with third parties, including Best Buy's "subsidiaries" and "affiliates."

'''The policy exhibits some additional traits that privacy-conscious individuals would likely find concerning:'''

* Users are opted in to data collection/sharing by default.
* The company does not honor the "do not track" request some browsers are able to set.
* It is not easy to quickly read the policy and understand exactly what is collected and how it is shared.
* Opting out may require users to provide some information that the user doesn't want collected.
* Opting out must be done per browser/device, and is stored with a simple browser cookie. If the cookie is erased, the user must opt out again.

On November 6, 2019, Best Buy discontinued support for their Insignia Connect app.<ref name=":0">https://web.archive.org/web/20191105124635/https://bestbuy.symphonysummit.com/insignia.web/<nowiki/>(November 5th, 2019) Retrieved January 15th, 2025</ref> This resulted in major functionality losses for affected Insignia products that used the service. == Data Privacy Concerns ==
According to Best Buy's privacy policy<ref>https://www.bestbuy.com/site/help-topics/privacy-policy/pcmcat204400050062.c?id=pcmcat204400050062</ref>, the company may collect, sell, and share information that you willingly provide, as well as information gathered through various tracking technologies.

In general, you may be asked to provide the company with your name, various forms of contact information, and payment information.

In "certain situations", you may also be asked to provide:

* Driver's license number
* Social security number
* Demographic and lifestyle information
* Health information
* Fingerprints
* Facial/wrist geometry (although the policy states this occurs in real time and the data is not retained)

The company may also collect data that you do not knowingly or explicitly provide:

* Camera and sensor data (from physical store locations)
* Your IP address
* Your browser information, browsing history, and referring URL
* The unique IMEI/UDID or MAC address of your mobile device
* The IDFA (Apple ID) or AAID (Google ID) of your mobile device
* Location information

This data collection can occur directly through your browser/device, or through third party web tracking technologies such as cookies, pixels and tags.

All of the above information can be sold or shared with third parties, including Best Buy's "subsidaries" and "affiliates."

The policy exhibits some additional traits that privacy-conscious individuals would likely find concerning:

* Users are opted in to data collection/sharing by default
* The company does not honor the "do not track" request some browsers are able to set
* It is not easy to quickly read the policy and understand exactly what is collected and how it is shared
* Opting out may require you to provide some of the information that you don't want collected
* Opt-out must be done per browser/device, and is stored with a simple browser cookie. If the cookie is erased, the user must opt out again

Kukatsz: Removed the word "expensive" to abide by the wiki's NPOV principle.

Dyson is a manufacturer of vacuum cleaners.

== Battery packs lacking cell balancing, featuring self-bricking firmware ==

Dyson battery packs contain a Battery Management System (BMS) with a chip that would be capable of balancing the individual cells. However, the manufacturer has decided to leave away a few inexpensive but essential resistors, resulting in no balancing to take effect. As a result, the battery pack wears out much quicker than necessary.

After just a few years, spare battery packs are "out of stock" (e.g., the Dyson V8 SV10 Battery being currently unavailable in Germany), effectively suggesting that the device should be thrown away.

Even if one charges (using a third-party charger) and balances, or even replaces the individual cells, the Battery Management System will still not allow you to charge the battery because its firmware writes 2 bytes into the configuration memory of the microcontroller that essentially bricks the battery pack. However, third-party open source firmware has been written to replace the proprietary firmware for some models, and for some models it has been found out which configuration bits need to be changed in order to un-brick the battery pack<ref>https://github.com/tinfever/FU-Dyson-BMS</ref><ref>https://github.com/davidmpye/V10_Dyson_BMS</ref>. This has been covered in the (specialist) media<ref>https://hackaday.com/2022/05/23/fighting-back-against-dodgy-dyson-batteries/</ref>.

This anti-consumer and anti-repair pattern can be observed across multiple models and product iterations, and appears to be fully intentional.

Open source software has been written to un-brick the battery pack by overwriting the configuration bits for some models using a 3.3V Raspberry Pi board<ref>https://github.com/kumdzio/PIC16LF1847arduino-programmer/tree/main/Dyson_original_firmware_unlocker_with_eeprom_check</ref>.
There have been reports of vacuum trigger button being harder to self-repair for a consumer due to the use of glue on the PCB, prompting the user to replace the whole housing.<ref name=":0" /><ref>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUqfrIk-FhM; [[Louis Rossmann - Video Directory#2022|Dyson's repair procedures suck, unlike their vacuums#2022]]</ref>

= Chase Bank Uses Financial History for Targeted Advertisements =

== Background ==
"Chase is the U.S. consumer and commercial banking business of JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE: JPM), a leading financial services firm based in the United States with assets of $3.9 trillion and operations worldwide. Chase serves nearly 80 million consumers and nearly 6 million small businesses, with a broad range of financial services, including personal banking, credit cards, mortgages, auto financing, investment advice, small business loans and payment processing. Customers can choose how and where they want to bank: More than 4,700 branches in 48 states and the District of Columbia, more than 15,000 ATMs, mobile, online and by phone. For more information, go to chase.com."

As a leading financial services firm, Chase bank needs to be held to the highest standards. However, in this incident Chase Bank has failed to meet those standards, by letting advertisers tap into customers private spending data for targeted advertisements.<ref>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCiXu6S6vEw</ref>

== Chase Media Solutions Incident ==
Following the acquisition of ''Figg'' on April 3rd, 2024, Chase launched "Chase Media Solutions". This was sold to investors as an a new frontier of advertising based on the claims companies who partner with Chase will have the ability use Chase first-party transaction data to target deals and advertisements on customers based on purchase history.<ref>https://media.chase.com/news/chase-launches-chase-media-solutions</ref> To test the service Chase worked with Air Canada, Solo Stove, Blue Bottle, and Whataburger. Air Canada saw an over $2.3m increase in sales during the first test as a result of this program.<ref>https://www.pcmag.com/news/chase-bank-to-let-advertisers-target-customers-based-on-spending-habits</ref>

=== Reception ===
This decision has came at the cost of consumer backlash, who complain there is no way to opt out of their data being used for these purposes. Many critics also complain that sharing personal purchases is a privacy violation and shows their banks lack of transparency.<ref>https://www.the-sun.com/money/10998718/chase-bank-media-solutions-brand-advertising-purchase-data/</ref>

=== Broader Implications ===
This incident is one of many in the sector in which:

* Large cooperation's mask their data collection agreement in overly large privacy policies.
* Siphon data from their users.
* Provide no way or no easy way to opt out of the data collection.
Best Buy did provide compensation to affected customers, however, this was only in the form of a partial refund in the form of a virtual gift card that was determined by the product type.<ref name=":1">https://web.archive.org/web/20191212130853/https://bestbuy.symphonysummit.com/insignia.web/Help_FAQ#collapseNine<nowiki/>(December 12th, 2019) Retrieved January 15th, 2025</ref><ref name=":0" /> Customers were also only able to redeem up to 10 serial numbers for product refunds, even if they owned more affected products.<ref name=":2">https://web.archive.org/web/20241125000759/https://www.theverge.com/2019/9/6/20853671/best-buy-connect-insignia-smart-plug-wifi-freezer-mobile-app-shutdown-november-6<nowiki>(November 25th, 2024) Retrieved January 15th, 2025 [Note: This source references functionality loss covered in a Best Buy FAQ. O_O What? Where? You mean the intro? I've specifically written it in a more relaxed tone, but improper language? I don't even see where and I've certainly keeped myself from using "inflammatory language" as in guidelines. I can't support the intro with sources as it is more like a short parable to inspire the reader.
Assumptions and hearsay - I've tried to support the list with sources, can you point where? Maybe can you add a [citation needed] where you feel it's needed? [[User:Konradmb|Konradmb]] ([[User talk:Konradmb|talk]]) 02:20, 15 January 2025 (UTC)

I think "improper language" refers to how flavorful some of the text in the page is. Remember that this is a wiki, so an effort should be made to keep language more passive and objective. A short parable works well in a persuasive argument, but this supposed to be a more strictly informative document. Similarly, without sources, the scenarios outlined in the introductory paragraph come off as more anecdotal than factual; which deviates from the page being a source with reliable documentation.

[[Adobe]], a computer software company that creates programs for content creation, editing, and publishing, has sparked controversy with their updated Terms of Service (ToS) which declares that by accepting, the user will grant Adobe a "non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license"[https://www.adobe.com/legal/terms.html#:~:text=Content%2C%20you%20grant%20us-,a%20non%2Dexclusive%2C%20worldwide%2C%20royalty%2Dfree%20license,-to%20do%20the%20following] to their content to '''reproduce''', '''distribute''', '''create derivative works''', '''publicly display''', '''publicly preform''', and '''sublicense [https://www.adobe.com/legal/terms.html#:~:text=reproduce%C2%A0%C2%A0%E2%80%A8%0A(for,your%20Cloud%20Content).]''' the user's content.

This sparks controversy because it can potentially violate a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA), and users can not access their content without first agreeing to the updated ToS, leaving many users without access to their unfinished projects. Furthermore, Adobe claims they do not use your content to train generative AI, but does admit they may use your content for machine learning and that you always have the option to opt-out despite there not being an "opt-out" button on the updated ToS screen shown below.

You've just bought your shiny new gadget. As you've just unboxed it, you want to set it up. Unfortunately, you can't do anything with it as is. You have to pair it with some shady app on your smartphone and accept a lengthy [[EULA roofie|EULA]], just to test it. Then you have to create a new account that links your e-mail and other personal data to the device.

Often this information is hidden deep inside manual, no mentions on the product page or box. Sometimes it's not even disclosed in manual. You have to watch some random unboxing videos on YouTube, to get to know that you need to create an account to use the device.
'''Why would I want to avoid such devices?'''
== Notes ==
Some device groups have an unified idea about account requirements, even through different manufacturers.

=== IP cameras ===
A lot of modern IP cameras do not have a traditional RTSP/HTTP video stream access, but need to be paired with an app. The smartphone app is the only means to view the camera stream. There's no sustainable way to record the stream locally. You are forced to use manufacturer's cloud storage subscription solution.

Sometimes volunteers have provided a way to circumvent this restriction, providing an alternative firmware that an advanced user can flash.<ref>https://github.com/roleoroleo/yi-hack-Allwinner-v2</ref> This is not an ideal solution, as the support is sometimes janky, and manufacturer can always block this in newer model revisions.

=== DJI ===
All DJI devices appear to need account for setup. The Android app needs to be sideloaded, circumventing Google's Play Store security checks.<ref>https://drones.stackexchange.com/questions/2209/how-come-the-dji-fly-app-is-not-in-google-play-store</ref> It was previously available on Play Store, but has been pulled off in 2021. DJI officially says it's due to changing "compatibility strategy".<ref>https://web.archive.org/web/20211213081844/https://twitter.com/DJISupport/status/1470305900132913152</ref>
