Add SolidWorks - license tracking data is embedded in the native format (sldprt, sldasm)

edit

Yes. The software calls home to try to check if files you open (sldprt, sldasm) are created using a pirated copy. The company keeps track of pirated license serial numbers and could use it for lega actions. This is especially bad for outsourcing and etc.

Thought experiment: you have company A. You have contacted company B to design a 3d model for you. Company B has pirated SolidWorks and sends you a sldprt file. You open this file and send it over to your cnc mill/lathe. Later you get a cease and desist letter from Dassault Systèmes because you have been using a file that has been created using a pirated copy of their software. Even if you have legally obtained your own license, this is still a very possible outcome. If taken to court however, the case would likely settle very early if it is even accepted. 77.105.213.37 22:31, 24 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
