The issue appears to be that the aftermarket cartridges use a battery with volatile memory whereas the OEM cartridges use non-volatile memory that does not require a battery.

We can argue whether or not that chip has to be there, whether or not brother makes it intentionally difficult to create an aftermarket, etc. however, this seems to be related to the design of the aftermarket cartridge, not the OEM. Louis (talk) 04:28, 3 March 2025 (UTC)
